Smile for the camera phone – you're posing for Stanford's big screens

As a new feature of Commencement this year, Stanford is inviting graduates and their friends and family members to email or text graduation photos for posting on the university's Commencement web page, official Facebook page and Jumbotron screens in Stanford Stadium.

The planners of Stanford's 2011 Commencement, which takes place at Stanford Stadium on Sunday, June 12, are offering graduates and their families lots of ways to see the festivities and to be seen.

This year, graduates can send Jumbotron-sized photo "shout outs" of thanks to their friends and family members during the ceremony and family members can make their congratulations known in a big way as well.

In addition to being featured on the Jumbotron screens just before and after the ceremony, photos will be posted on the university's official Facebook and on the 120th Commencement home page. In addition, the festivities will be webcast live and also broadcast on KZSU. To participate, simply email or text your photo(s) to gradphotos@stanford.edu.

Sunday's celebration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the traditional Wacky Walk, in which graduates take to the field for one last campus frolic – holding signs, carrying props, wearing costumes – before taking their seats.

Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, president of Mexico, is this year's Commencement speaker.

Watch Commencement on a live webcast, YouTube and Stanford iTunes

Recognizing that many family members and friends of graduates cannot make it to the Commencement ceremony, Stanford will offer a live webcast of the event, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time on Sunday. An option to display captions will be available just beneath the video on this page during the live webcast.

Twitter users can receive live updates from Commencement via the Stanford Twitter feed (@Stanford). The twitter hashtag for graduation is #stanford11.

Commencement will be broadcast live on KZSU, the student-run radio station, at 90.1 FM or on the web at http://kzsu.stanford.edu. Saturday's Baccalaureate address, featuring Gail E. Bowman, university chaplain at Dillard University in New Orleans, will be broadcast live on KZSU at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 11.

As has been the case in previous years, recordings of the main Commencement ceremony will be available on Stanford on iTunes U and the Stanford YouTube Channel following the event. A link to those recordings will be added to the Commencement homepage when they are available.

Campus visitors also are encouraged to download the university's official iPhone application, iStanford. It provides visitors with the most detailed campus map available for mobile devices. The application is searchable and shows users where they are based on their GPS coordinates.

As of today, the university expects to grant 1,720 bachelor's degrees, 2,167 master's degrees and 1,054 doctoral degrees.
