The Pritzker family of Chicago, founders of the Hyatt hotel group, has pledged $10 million to Stanford to help Chicago-area students attend the university. Stanford will use the gift to create a scholarship fund dedicated to supporting Chicago students with the greatest financial need.

In a study that could be the first step toward carbon-free electricity directly from plants, Stanford engineers have generated electrical current by tapping into the electron activity in individual algae cells. Photosynthesis excites electrons, which can then be turned into an electrical current.
