Andrew Luck named a Heisman finalist

Quarterback Andrew Luck, who led the Cardinal to an 11-1 record season and a berth in the Discover Orange Bowl, has been named one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy, which honors the nation's most outstanding college football player.

As some universities reconsider the need for requiring students to study literature, Joshua Landy, co-director of the Philosophy and Literature Initiative, says: "I think we need a better story. And we all need to be circulating that story, as widely as possible."

Isabella Abbott, world-renowned algae expert, dies at 91

Isabella Abbott, Stanford professor emerita of biology, who literally wrote the book on Marine Algae of California, as well as numerous recipes for cooking with kelp and other seaweeds, died in her home in Honolulu in October.

  • Common Data Set updated: Stanford's Common Data Set, which reports university statistics about such subjects as admission, annual expenses and degrees conferred, has been updated on the web. Annual Common Data Set statistics, generally used to answer college guidebooks, result from a collaboration between publishers and the educational community to improve and standardize statistical reporting.
