Valerie Jarrett, one of President Barack Obama's senior advisors and a Stanford alumna, will deliver this year's St. Clair Drake Memorial Lecture on March 4, at 4 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium. The free, ticketed event will be open to Stanford students, faculty and staff with a Stanford ID. Tickets will be available Feb. 22.

As a teenager in the mid-1960s, Gregory Freidin moved with his family to a rough side of Moscow, to what he described as a neighborhood notorious "for its Jewish thieves, counterfeiters and dealers in stolen goods." In short, the Soviet kid discovered Isaac Babel's world.

Anita Ventura Mozley, founding curator of photography at the Stanford Museum of Art and a leading expert on Eadweard Muybridge, died Jan. 23 of natural causes at her home in Menlo Park. In addition to Muybridge, Mozley organized exhibitions on Ansel Adams, Joseph Raphael and Robert Frank.
