Peter Vitousek has won the 2010 Japan Prize, one of the world's major awards for contributions to progress in science and technology and advancement of world peace and prosperity. The prize includes 50 million yen (approximately $540,000). Read more.

Londa Schiebinger, director of the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research, found that academic scientists spend about 19 hours a week on basic household chores. If universities offered a benefit to pay someone else to do that work, scientists would have more time to spend on the jobs they're trained for, she says. Read more.

- Flu clinic eligibility expanded: Vaden Health Center has received a substantial supply of H1N1 vaccine and will distribute it, along with seasonal flu vaccine, to students and their spouses or domestic partners and faculty, staff, retirees and their spouses or domestic partners today from 3- 6 p.m. and on Monday, Jan. 25, from 3-6 p.m. Both clinics will be held at Vaden.
