The Dalai Lama will visit campus in October, returning to discuss compassion, altruism and what it means to lead a meaningful life. Tibet's exiled leader was invited by Philip Pizzo, dean of the Medical School. Scotty McLennan, dean of the Office for Religious Life, is co-sponsoring the events.

The 2009 Annual Report, published exclusively online for the first time, highlights progress in the university's initiatives and achievements among faculty, staff and students. President Hennessy writes, "I see reason for optimism every day when I walk across the Stanford campus and talk to our students." According to a study conducted by Stanford and the University of Toronto, researchers find a stronger correlation between money and happiness for people paid by the hour than for those paid by salary, because hourly workers are more regularly reminded of the value of their time.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Pigott Theater, the cast of L. A. Theatre Works' radio play RFK: The Journey to Justice will participate in a discussion with the Aurora Forum's Mark Gonnerman as part of the Art + Invention series. On Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 8 p. m. in Dinkelspiel Auditorium, the company will perform the West Coast premiere of the play.
