Stephen Schneider, leading climate expert, dead at 65

Stephen Schneider, a biology professor and leading researcher in climate change, died Monday of an apparent heart attack. He was a lead scientist on the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore.

Point-of-sale advertising major cause of teen smoking

A study published in the August issue of Pediatrics led by Lisa Henriksen, left, senior research scientist at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, reports that teens' exposure to cigarette advertising at retail outlets substantially increases the odds they will start smoking.

New wave of 'phishing' attacks snags unwary web users

In recent weeks, members of the Stanford community have fallen prey to "phishing attacks" and given their usernames and passwords to Internet scam artists who had sent them fraudulent emails disguised as messages from the university.
