Heat waves, high temps could be common in U.S. by 2039

Exceptionally long heat waves and other hot events could become commonplace in the United States in the next 30 years, according to a study led by Noah Diffenbaugh, assistant professor of environmental Earth system science. The study appears in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Palumbi seeks clues to saving corals as the oceans warm

Stanford Magazine is out with its July/August issue featuring a cover story called "The Comeback Corals" about the research of Steve Palumbi, director of the Hopkins Marine Station, and his team in the waters around the American Samoan island of Ofu.

Melanoma-initiating cells identified by Stanford study

Scientists in the laboratory of Irving Weissman, director of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, have identified a cancer-initiating cell in human melanomas. This finding is significant because the existence of such a cell in the aggressive skin cancer has been a source of debate.
