$12 million gift funds education, Jewish studies at Stanford

The San Francisco-based Jim Joseph Foundation has awarded $12 million to the School of Education for a concentration in education and Jewish studies focused exclusively on preparing doctoral scholars and researchers. Education Professor Sam Wineburg led the effort to renew the concentration.

At a celebration for the Bing Concert Hall Tuesday, an eclectic mix of music   –  the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Stanford Taiko and the mobile phone orchestra  – filled the air. Major supporters Peter and Helen Bing joined President John Hennessy in the ceremonial groundbreaking.

BeWell@Stanford: Cardinal Walk set for Friday

Last year, more than 1,200 faculty, staff, alumni and community members participated in the Cardinal Walk, a 1.5-mile jaunt around campus. Hosted by BeWell and led by Provost John Etchemendy, this year's walk, set for Friday, May 14, begins at Roble Field at 11:30 a.m.

  • SCRA open house: The Stanford Campus Recreation Association (SCRA) at the corner of Bowdoin Street and Stanford Avenue is holding an open house on Sunday, May 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. SCRA membership is open only to housing-eligible faculty and staff. But various swimming, tennis and fitness offerings are open to all. Summer Fun camps and other programs are available for children. Visit SCRA's website for more information.
