Anthropologist Matthew Kohrman has plotted the international whereabouts of hundreds of cigarette factories. His Cigarette Citadels project gives the public a better understanding of where the industry operates and shares information that could combat the single largest cause of preventable death.

Add pine-bark extract to the list of dietary supplements that don’t live up to their promises. A new study shows that the extract had no effect in lowering blood pressure or reducing other risk factors for heart disease. Randall Stafford, associate professor of medicine, is senior author.

Sculptor Aristides "Aris" Demetrios spent two days last week inspecting "The Claw," which campus machinists and plumbers are restoring. He praised their work, saying the fountain he created in 1964 after winning a national competition is "tantalizingly close" to achieving its former glory.

- Flu shot reminder:
Members of the campus community are reminded that seasonal flu shots are free for faculty, staff, students, spouses and dependents of students, post-doctoral scholars and retirees. Spouses and dependents of employees, post-doctoral scholars and retirees can receive the vaccine for $25. Flu shot clinics are being offered throughout campus beginning this week. Check the university's flu information website for dates, times and locations. All vaccines are mercury free.
