Stanford officials, PG&E to discuss concerns about gas lines

The recent gas pipeline explosion in San Bruno has understandably increased concerns over the status of natural gas transmission lines near campus. Stanford utilities personnel continue to communicate with PG&E on issues related to gas lines near Stanford and also are attempting to determine when inspections of these lines will be finished. Larry Gibbs, associate vice provost for Environmental Health and Safety, provides further information.

Biologist Gretchen Daily to receive 2010 Heinz Award

Gretchen Daily, a professor of biology and senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, has been named one of 10 recipients of the 2010 Heinz Awards. The Heinz Family Foundation cited Daily for her innovative work to place a value on the services provided by natural ecosystems.

Bike thefts rose, car and building burglaries fell in 2009

Last year, thieves stole 375 bicycles from the campus and from nearby university buildings – a slight increase from 2008, according to the 2010 Stanford University Safety, Security & Fire Report. Campus community members are urged to register their bikes and to report suspicious activity.
