Fracking can be done in environmentally responsible way

More and more natural gas is being extracted from underground shale deposits, but environmental concerns have been raised. Stanford geophysicist Mark Zoback, who recently served on a Department of Energy panel of experts, says hydraulic fracturing can be done safely.

Team invents sutureless method for joining blood vessels

Researchers, led by Stanford microsurgeon Geoffrey Gurtner, left, used a poloxamer gel and bioadhesive rather than a needle and thread to join animal blood vessels, a procedure called vascular anastomosis. Results of their research were published online Aug. 28 in Nature Medicine.

  • Obesity Summit: Researchers and students from throughout the Stanford campus who are interested in finding ways to combat the obesity epidemic are invited to participate in Obesity Summit 2 on Sept. 13.
