Stanford lauded for its leadership in protecting the environment

When the State of California announced the 2015 Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards, Stanford University was among the winners.

The GEELA Awards recognize individuals, organizations and businesses that have made “notable, voluntary contributions in conserving California’s precious resources, protecting and enhancing our environment, building public-private partnerships and strengthening the state’s economy.”

The award to Stanford specifically lauded the success of Stanford Energy System Innovations, or SESI, a campus program that has already resulted in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

“Stanford University is proud to have developed an energy solution that is reducing our emissions by 68 percent and conserving 15 percent of our water,” said JOSEPH STAGNER, executive director of Stanford’s Department of Sustainability and Energy Management. “It is our hope that the Stanford Energy System Innovations project will serve not only sustainability at Stanford, but also as a model for adept solutions, and inspire others to action,” Stagner added. He and FAHMIDA AHMED, director of the Office of Sustainability, received the GEELA Award on behalf of the university at a ceremony in Sacramento earlier this month.
