Svetlana Boym: "Freedom and the Arts of Dissent"

Harry Camp Memorial Lecturer
The lecture explores the experience of public freedom as co-creation in the world and “miracle of infinite improbability” (Hannah Arendt). Drawing distinctions between liberation and freedom and between estrangement from the world and estrangement for the world, the lecture reexamines avant-garde and artistic and political dissent in Russia and Eastern Europe of the 20th century with uncanny connections to the public protests all over the world in 2011-2012.
Boym explores cross-cultural approaches to public freedom and proposes an alternative “off-modern” archeology of the twentieth and twenty-first century experimental thought from Hannah Arendt, Georg Simmel and Victor Shklovsky to contemporary political art.
