The minor in Global Studies, with a concentration in European Studies, is designed for undergraduate students who have an interdisciplinary interest in the history, culture, politics, societies, and institutions of Europe, past and present.  Students will work with their minor advisor to develop their individual programs.  The minor is especially well-suited for undergraduates who plan to make Europe-based overseas studies a part of their Stanford experience.

Goals:

  • Allow students with an interdisciplinary interest in Europe to organize their studies in a coherent and mentored minor.
  • Allow students who want to participate/have participated in a Bing Overseas Studies Program in Europe to prepare for/follow up on it.

Requirements:

Completion of 28 units that include the following:

  • 3-unit SGS introductory course,  GLOBAL 101: Global Studies Gateway.
  • 5-unit core seminar course, INTNLREL 122: Introduction to European Studies.
  • 5-unit survey course on European history or culture. For the list of course alternatives that fulfill this requirement, please visit <here>.
  • 15 additional units on a coherent theme of interest developed with the minor advisor.  This combination of courses can be on virtually any thematic subject with an interdisciplinary and comparative focus on Europe.
  • At least 13 of the 28 units need to be completed on the Stanford campus.

Advanced proficiency in a modern European language achieved by one of the following:

  • Successful completion of six quarters of college-level study of a modern European language.
  • Completion of a course taught in a modern European language at the 100-level or higher and with a letter grade of "B" (3.0) or higher.  This may be a course on a European language or literature, or some other subject, as long as it fulfills the above criteria.  Note that this course in European literature or another subject may be double-counted towards the foreign language and the minor unit requirements.
  • Achievement of the advanced proficiency level on the ACTFL scale in a test administered by the Stanford Language Center.

A capstone experience in European Studies, including but not limited to one of the following:

  • 25-page minimum research paper with a focus on European Studies.
  • Successful completion of an overseas study program or internship in Europe.

Students will share their work or overseas experience with other SGS minors in an end-of-year Capstone Seminar led by SGS faculty.

Steps for declaring the Global Studies Minor with Specialization in European Studies:

  1. Make an appointment with one of the two European Studies faculty advisors, Professor Ken Scheve (scheve@stanford.edu) or Professor Crombez (crombez@stanford.edu).  It is important that you meet with an advisor to review degree requirements and to determine if the Global Studies Minor is a good fit for your academic interests.
  2. Together with the faculty advisor, declare the Global Studies Minor in Axess.
  3. After declaring the Global Studies Minor in Axess, meet with The Europe Center program administrator Karen Haley to complete and submit the Declaration or Change of Undergraduate Major, Minor, Honors, or Degree Program form.  This is where you will declare the specialization in European Studies.

In the long term, there will be a system enhancement that will allow students to declare both the Minor and the Specialization entirely online.
