It's remarkable how much more sophisticated China's diplomatic strategy in LatinAmerica is nowadays compared to that of the United States. While the Chinese talk investment, the US is like "a jealous ex", a CentralAmerican diplomat recently told me, "all they talk about is China"

US Withdrawal from the INF treaty will allow it to develop & deploy a large number of medium & intermediate-range missiles around China. Chinese military strategists believe that US missiles would pose an unacceptable threat to China’s nuclear arsenal.

More actual data (gasp) to refute the smear tactics of the Trumpists in charging CN w/ “debt-trap diplomacy.” BJ needs to improve its track record in this area, but the US just makes the problem worse by making such reckless charges.

As I have written before, Abe’s moves toward CN make very good sense strategically, given the extremely hostile policies the Trump Administration is pursuing vis-a-vis Beijing. JP and CN could become the anchor that restrains American excesses.

I don't understand why almost every int'l news story about Africa's spiraling debt focuses on Chinese lending when African countries pay 3x in interest payments to private creditors. Seems like that piece of context would be critical to the overall story.
