Why Teach SoCo?

Sophomore College offers faculty a unique teaching experience, in which students have no other obligations and are solely committed for the three weeks to their SoCo seminar.  The program provides faculty a pedagogical laboratory in which they can experiment with experiential learning components and incorporate out-of-classroom activities.

SoCo Students

SoCo students are characterized by a high-level of commitment and enthusiasm for their seminar. Students write application essays explaining their interest in the topic and what they will contribute to the class. In April, faculty review applications and select 15 students.

Preparing for SoCo

Sophomore College course planning occurs in winter and spring quarters.  September Studies staff provides administrative support, including ordering books, reserving classrooms, creating Courswork sites, and arranging spring Class Meetings, in which faculty meet with students to distribute their syllabus, discuss class goals, and go over summer assignments. The Class Meeting lays the foundation for students to arrive fully prepared to participate in September.

SoCo in September

Classes meet daily for the first ten days, generally 10 a.m.- 12 noon; students are available all-day for other learning activities, including labs, field trips, and research. The third week is available for student presentations, further class meetings, and field trips.

After SoCo

The relationships established in SoCo often continue beyond the program and funding is available for class reunions.  Students often find advisors in their SoCo faculty, and faculty find motivated students to bring into their departments and as potential collaborators on future projects.
