Bio

While it is common to assume that interdisciplinary art  (typically captured today under the term “installation art”)is simply a given in contemporary artistic practice, the origins and development of interdisciplinarity in art-making are largely left unconsidered. My current work examines this history from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, from Richard Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk to Dada, Duchamp, the Bauhauslers, Warhol, Beuys, and contemporary art by Ann Hamilton, Marina Abramovic, and Rirkrit Tiravanija, among others. Concepts of fluidity, erosion, formlessness, and horizontality are essential to philosophical and historical discussions that integrate the particular impact of political turmoil, war, exile, technology, and networks, as they press artists toward the blurring or destruction of boundaries between disciplines.
