Stanford Plasma Physics

The Stanford Plasma Physis Lab is headed by Professor Mark Cappelli. With his group, Mark has been advancing the theoretical and experimental understanding of plasmas for over three decades, advising over 25 PhDs, and producing over 130 journal articles. See current group.

What is plasma?

Plasma is ionized gas. It is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, liquid, and gas) and is by far the most abundant state in the universe. The sun and other stars, lightning, and electrical sparks are all examples of plasma.

Why study plasma?

Plasma research integrates theoretical physics, numerical simulations, and laboratory experiments. Plasma has numerous applications, including space travel, electricity production, medical devices, and plasma screens, and the area is evolving and growing rapidly. Prospective students
