Overview
The Santa Lucia Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit land trust incorporated in 1995 to conserve the ecological integrity of the protected lands within the Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel, CA. The Conservancy is dedicated to advancing the art and science of conservation-compatible development through adaptive land management, conservation easement stewardship, ecological research, and environmental education programs. The Conservancy is conducting novel and essential habitat restoration and wildlife research on 18,000 acres of diverse natural habitats within the Santa Lucia Preserve in the northern Santa Lucia Mountains south of Carmel, CA. As a small staff, the Conservancy partners with invested and passionate students to increase our reach at the landscape scale. This provides a unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the non-profit model, conservation ecology, land management, field techniques and research design for conserving and protecting our natural resources.
Position Description
Putting Conservation into Practice: Adaptive management and conservation biology
Get your hands dirty for conservation! California ecosystems and wildlife populations are threatened by habitat loss and invasive species. On the Preserve the Conservancy has the opportunity to restore degraded habitat and support imperiled species. Assist the Conservancy’s scientists in monitoring, researching and restoring the plants, animals and landscapes of the Preserve.
Intern will participate in:
- Wildlife population sampling and monitoring
- Tricolored blackbird trapping and banding
- Wildlife surveys through Citizen Science camera trapping
- Habitat management and planning
- Quantitative botanical surveys
- Sudden oak death forest management
- GIS mapping of activities and resources
- Data management and analysis
Qualifications
- A passion for conservation and motivation to make meaningful contributions
- A personal vehicle and clean driving record.
- A positive attitude, willingness to learn, ability to follow instructions with minimal supervision, self-motivation and confidence working independently and on a team.
- Comfortable interacting with a variety of stakeholders including biologists, other volunteers, landowners, and community members.
- Must be physically fit and capable of hiking and carrying equipment over varied and steep terrain in wilderness locations.
- Field work experience with transects/quadrats, wildlife handling, GPS use, and orienteering desired, but not required.
- Comfort with computer software including Microsoft Office programs. Experience with statistical packages and ArcGIS desired but not required for most projects.
- Time commitment will depend on arrangement with student’s schedule and project duration
- Activities for this position will be conducted primarily within an 18,000 acre nature preserve located in Carmel Valley, CA, with some opportunity for off-site activities in greater Monterey County.
Training
Interns will be trained and supervised as needed for various tasks and projects. Once trained, interns may work alone or in collaboration with staff and other volunteers.
Compensation
Housing is offered on the Conservancy lands. A Bill Lane Center stipend will be provided as compensation.
