Burlingame Station Redesign
Overview
Caltrain began construction at the Burlingame Caltrain Station platforms in June 2007 to improve safety, pedestrian access and make train service more efficient. The project included numerous safety measures and reflects the historic station.
The $20.5 million construction project covered a range of improvements including accessibility and remodeling the Morrell Avenue crossing north of the station. The design included a pedestrian plaza, enhanced landscaping, wider sidewalks, custom shelters and new station fencing. Construction was completed in June 2008.

Reason for Project:
This project will improve passenger service and safety at the station, and allow Caltrain to eliminate the “holdout rule” at Burlingame. Currently trains must “hold out” beyond the Burlingame station if another train is in the station, and cannot enter the station until the first train has left. This project will allow more than one train to enter or pass through the station at a time, allowing for more flexibility in scheduling trains.
Scope of Work:
The center boarding platform will be demolished, and outside boarding platforms will be constructed to meet the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The result is that passengers will no longer board between the tracks but from the new platforms outside. Center track fencing and signalized pedestrian grade crossings will be installed, to prevent crossing the tracks except for at designated areas, and tracks will undergo rehabilitation.
Additionally, grade crossings and drainage will be improved, the Morrell Avenue crossing will be gated and signalized and South Lane will be permanently closed, where it intersects the rail at the station.
