The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided a one-time appropriation to California of $3.2 million for equipment assistance grants to school food authorities (SFA) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The NSLP equipment assistance grants are to improve the infrastructure in the NSLP; however, the authority for the grants was provided in the context of the overall effort to stimulate activity within the American economy. The program serves sponsors of the NSLP. This program focuses on sites in which fifty percent or more of the enrolled children qualify for free and reduced-price meals.

Required Eligibility Criteria |
These funds will be distributed to selected public school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, private schools, and residential child care institutes that applied for the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Equipment grant on behalf of school sites that participate in the NSLP but did not receive an award. Priority is given to sites in which fifty percent or more of the enrolled children qualify for free and reduced-price meals. Applicants were required to submit a grant application package by May 27, 2009. |
Other Eligibility Considerations |
Schools were chosen based on their percentage of free/reduced-price students, with the highest priority given to schools with the highest percentage of low-income students, to the maximum extent practicable. SFAs must demonstrate the need for the equipment focusing on four areas: 1) equipment lending itself to improving meal quality, 2) equipment that improves food safety, 3) energy efficient equipment, and 4) equipment that supports an increase in participation. SFAs must demonstrate their ability to spend the grant funds within three months of receipt. |
