About MARINE

MARINE is a collaboration between The Center for Ocean Solutions and seven Monterey Bay area academic campuses to prepare our future ocean leaders, and enhance marine education. Our partner campuses include:

Our inter-institutional activities create opportunities for graduate students and early career professionals to apply their training to ocean challenges and engage in real world problem-solving and policy recommendations.

The MARINE Vision

As a collaboration between the Center for Ocean Solutions and seven Monterey Bay area campuses, MARINE facilitates inter-campus activities that create opportunities for upcoming professionals to apply their training to ocean challenges and engage in real world environmental problem-solving. MARINE enhances graduate marine education in the Monterey Bay area by preparing students to be future ocean leaders through core concepts of communication, innovation and collaboration and by broadening their graduate experiences in interdisciplinary problem-solving.

MARINE Program Goals

We equip Monterey Bay area graduate and early career professionals with skills to be ocean leaders and communicators by:

1. training students to contribute to environmental decision-making and shaping the students' leadership and communications skills early in their careers

2. exposing students to professional development and networking opportunities

3. nurturing the growth of MARINE as a networked community of students and faculty who focus on ocean-related interdisciplinary fields related to science and policy

MARINE therefore enhances graduate ocean education in the Monterey Bay region by:

a. providing leadership training opportunities for graduate students and early career professionals, including interdisciplinary and inter-institutional short courses and workshops

b. reducing barriers to, and enhancing opportunities for, multi-campus study and work

c. involving students in strategic initiatives and projects

Criteria for Selecting MARINE Activities and Projects

In light of the MARINE program goals, all MARINE activities and projects must:

• provide a graduate professional learning opportunity related to ocean leadership that one campus alone cannot

• reflect current interdisciplinary thinking and practice in science and policy, highlighting concepts or processes that are transferable to other environmental problem-solving contexts

• contribute to building and reinforcing our inter-institutional collaboration

• extend the existing expertise within the institutions by incorporating multiple perspectives and creating interdisciplinary opportunities

• integrate professional development activities that enhance students’ leadership skills, focusing on:

o communication, such as listening, negotiation or tailoring messages,

o innovation, such as thinking creatively about solutions

o and/or collaboration, such as teamwork, conflict resolution or forging partnerships.
