Stanford offense was under 5 yards per play for the third straight game yesterday. The last time that happened: the first three games of 2008, before Andrew Luck was QB.

Who thought that Stanford would be trying to play spoiler against Colorado? The Buffs have a 60 percent chance to win the Pac-12 South, according to ESPN's FPI.

Stanford's sputtering offense vs. WSU: 60 plays, 296 yards, 4.9 yards per play. Versus Notre Dame: 60 plays, 296 yards, 4.9 yards per play. The Cardinal's scoring output was virtually identical -- they enjoyed defensive touchdowns in both games.

Some candidates to keep in mind for Purdue: Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck, Illinois State's Brock Spack (longtime Purdue assistant), Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Drevno, Ohio State offensive coordinator Ed Warinner and co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tim Beck, New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, Indiana defensive coordinator Tom Allen, North Dakota State's Chris Klieman

West Virginia finally gets some respect in the AP poll and jumps eight spots from No. 20 to the No. 12 spot. The Mountaineers get another big shot to prove themselves this week vs. TCU.

Still only two Pac-12 teams in the new AP Poll: No. 5 Washington, No. 19 Utah. The Huskies stay put on their bye week; the Utes move up two spots after winning at Oregon State.

While there are probably going to be plenty of plot twists over the second half of the season, it's possible that the Pac-12 divisional races will come down to two games the final weekend of the regular season: Washington at Washington State on Friday, Nov. 25 in the North and Utah at Colorado the following day in the South. Such a possibility shows a conference in transition. For one, Utah-Colorado means the South could become a battle between the expansion teams of 2011, with the Buffaloes in the hunt for the first time after averaging just one conference win during their first five years in the league. In the North, Oregon and Stanford have won every title since expansion — divisional and the conference as a whole — so a transition to the state of Washington and a potentially epic Apple Cup feels significant.

Alabama posted a 99.9 defensive efficiency rating (out of 100) in its win against Tennessee, the fourth-highest single-game rating in 2016. The Tide have posted a defensive efficiency rating above 90 in every game this season, and they now have a 98.5 efficiency rating on the season, the highest for a team through seven games in the last decade.

Alabama left few doubts about who is the No. 1 team in the country. After dominating Tennessee, the Crimson Tide moved up to No. 1 in ESPN's three main metrics: FPI, Strength of Record and Game Control. That means that at this point in the season, Alabama has the most impressive résumé (SOR and GC) and is predicted to be the strongest team going forward (FPI).

How good was Ohio State's J.T. Barrett in crunch time? He completed 11-of-15 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns in the second half and overtime at Wisconsin, posting a QBR of 84.5. After throwing an interception and five off-target passes in the first half, Barrett had only one off-target pass in his final 13 attempts. His 42.8 percent completion ratio in the first half was the third-worst in a first half of his career.
