Stanford Holds Off Penn

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 1 Stanford women’s volleyball team posted a 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 win over Penn to improve to 6-0 on the year, Saturday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. Penn falls to 2-4 on the season.

Stanford fell behind early in all three sets, but managed to turn things around to snag the win. The Cardinal hit .406 as a team, while holding the Quakers to a .220 clip. Stanford also won the block column, 8.0 to 2.0.

Freshman Sidney Brown, who made her first collegiate start, led the Cardinal with 12 kills on 17 errorless swings to hit .706. Junior outside hitter Jordan Burgess added 10 kills on a .450 hitting percentage to go with seven digs.

Sophomore setter Kelsey Humphreys gave junior Madi Bugg a break, starting the match and racking up career highs of 36 assists and 10 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Senior libero Kyle Gilbert finished with a match-best 14 digs, while registering her first kill of the season.

Junior outside hitter Brittany Howard totaled eight kills and four blocks in two sets, while junior middle Megan McGehee put down a career high three aces to go with a season-best five blocks. Redshirt freshman Ivana Vanjak, making her second appearance of her career, finished with two kills.

Penn was led by junior Alexis Genske who hit .400 with 11 kills and eight digs. Freshman Aimee Stephenson added nine kills and five digs for the Quakers.

Stanford is back in action Saturday night, hosting Santa Clara at 7 p.m. PT in Maples Pavilion.
