STANFORD, Calif. – Powered by a career high 27 kills from junior Jordan Burgess, the top-ranked Stanford women’s volleyball team defeated No. 16 Arizona, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-9, Friday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal improves to 24-0, its best start since 1991, and 14-0 in the Pac-12, while the Wildcats drop to 18-7 and 7-6 conference.

The Cardinal (.232) hit under .250 for just the fourth time this season, but moved to 5-0 in five-set matches. The top two teams in the Pac-12 in digs per set entering the match, Stanford and Arizona combined for 219 tonight. The Cardinal also totaled 13.0 blocks.

Burgess hit .375 after converting 27 kills on a career high 64 attempts with just three errors. She also registered 10 digs, including the 1,000th of her career, to notch her 15th double-double of the year.

Senior libero Kyle Gilbert held down the defense with a school record 40 digs. She broke the previous record of 33, set by herself (vs. USC 10/30/13) and Gabi Ailes (vs. UCLA 10/31/09).

Junior setter Madi Bugg and senior opposite Morgan Boukather also got in on the defensive effort in a big way, each recording career highs of 24 digs. Bugg added 58 assists and three blocks for her 12th double-double of the year.

Arizona did a good job of defending Stanford’s middles. Junior Inky Ajanaku finished with 10 kills and five blocks, while redshirt freshman Merete Lutz had seven kills and six blocks.

The Wildcats were led by senior Madi Kingdon’s 25 kills and 30 digs. Sophomore setter Penina Snuka finished with 46 assists and 19 digs.

Stanford hits the road next week, travelling to Los Angeles to face No. 19 USC on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and No. 15 UCLA on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Wednesday’s match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
