The Opening Tip

Media Memo
Sunday’s game can be heard on KNBR 1050 AM, featuring the insightful duo of Scott Reiss (play-by-play) and John Platz (analyst). KZSU 90.1 FM provides coverage with Shawn Tuteja (play-by-play) and Dev Bhargava (analyst). The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks, with JB Long (play-by-play) and Casey Jacobsen (analyst).

Looking Ahead
Stanford’s six games in November are its fewest since also playing six in the season’s first month back in 2010. The Northwestern Mutual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic continues next weekend in Brooklyn, before Stanford returns home to face Delaware and then makes a quick visit to DePaul.

Northwestern Mutual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Format
Stanford, Duke, Temple and UNLV will serve as regional round hosts for the Northwestern Mutual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The host schools begin play at campus sites before advancing to the championship rounds next weekend at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The remainder of the field will participate in a round-robin series at one of two sub-host sites. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Third Barclays Center Visit Since Last November
Only the Brooklyn Nets might be more familiar with the Barclays Center than Stanford, which last year visited the arena twice in a one-month span. While competing in the Progressive Legends Classic (Nov. 25-26), Stanford defeated Houston 86-76 before falling 88-67 to Pittsburgh in the championship game. The Cardinal returned for the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational (Dec. 21), dropping a 68-65 decision to Michigan.

Recent Preseason Tournament History
The Cardinal is participating in its sixth preseason tournament under head coach Johnny Dawkins. Stanford has compiled a 11-8 record in such games, with its best performances coming in the form of runner-up finishes at the 2013 Progressive Legends Classic (lost to Pittsburgh), 2011 Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off (lost to Syracuse) and 2009 Cancun Challenge (lost to Kentucky). The Cardinal is searching for its first preseason tournament title since capturing the 2007 Basketball Travelers Classic with a 67-48 victory over UC Santa Barbara at Maples Pavilion.

Scouting South Dakota
South Dakota dropped a 60-52 decision at Utah Valley State in its season opener on Friday. The Coyotes shot just 28.8 percent, made 4-24 from long distance and committed 18 turnovers ... The Coyotes (12-18, 6-8 Summit) finished fifth in conference play last season and was eliminated in the first round of the Summit League Tournament ... South Dakota is led by first-year head coach Craig Smith, who previously served as an assistant coach at Nebraska ... The Coyotes became an NCAA Division I member prior to the 2008-09 season. The Coyotes are seeking their first winning season since an 18-15 finish in 2010-11 ... Be sure to watch: Tyler Larson (13.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 6-12 FT), Brandon Bos (12.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2-12 FG, 7-8 FT), Tre Burnette (9.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 4-11 FG).

Cardinal Inks Top-25 Class
Head coach Johnny Dawkins has announced the signing of three incoming student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The group will join the Cardinal for the 2015-16 campaign. The class, which is ranked No. 22 by Rivals.com, includes Josh Sharma (Lexington, Mass. - Northfield Mount Hermon HS), Marcus Sheffield (Alpharetta, Ga. - Chattahoochee HS) and Cameron Walker (Santa Maria, Calif. - Righetti HS). All three signees are projected as top-100 players and four-star recruits, following up Stanford’s recent line of strong classes.

Career Night For Nastic
Stefan Nastic enjoyed a breakthrough performance in Friday’s opener. In addition to his career-high 26 points (11-14 FG, 4-4 FT), Nastic registered career-high totals in field goals (11), assists (4) and minutes (32) while staying out of foul trouble. Nastic was equally solid defensively, blocking one shot and taking advantage of his size in the post. His 26 points were the most by a Stanford player in a season opener since Dwight Powell poured in 27 against San Francisco back on Nov. 9, 2012.
