SEATTLE – The No. 1 Stanford women’s volleyball team fell for the first time this season, dropping a 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 decision at No. 5 Washington, Wednesday, in front of more than 8,000 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. The Cardinal falls to 28-1 on the year and to 18-1 in the Pac-12, while the Huskies move to 28-2 and 17-2 in the conference.
Errors proved to be costly for the Cardinal, which hit .265 as a team. Stanford had 11 service errors, nine reception errors and 17 attack errors in the match. Washington hit .331 as a team and registered nine service aces, including six in the first set. Stanford won the block column, 10.0 to 6.0.
Junior outside hitter Jordan Burgess led Stanford with 14 kills, eight digs and two blocks. Junior middle blocker Inky Ajanaku finished with 11 kills and five blocks, while senior opposite Morgan Boukather also tallied 11 kills. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Merete Lutz added eight kills and five blocks.
Junior setter Madi Bugg turned in her 14th double-double of the year with 48 assists and 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Brittany Howard posted six kills and seven digs, while senior libero Kyle Gilbert collected 11 digs.
Washington, which is undefeated at home this season, was led by senior outside hitter Krista Vansant’s 21 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Tia Scambray added 12 kills and 11 digs, while libero Cassie Strickland had a match high 16 digs to go with four aces.
Stanford wraps-up the regular season on Friday, Nov. 28 on the road in Berkeley, Calif., at Bay Area rival California. First serve between the Cardinal and Golden Bears is slated for 3 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks. A win over Cal would give Stanford the outright Pac-12 title.
