TUCSON, Ariz. -- Freshman Simone Manuel won three individual events, as the Stanford women’s swimming and diving team won seven of the first eight events to beat host Arizona, 145-111, Friday afternoon. Cardinal newcomers combined to take six of the 12 individual contests.
Manuel found her usual spot in first place of the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles. The school’s record holder in all three events also swam a leg of the 400 free relay for Stanford’s ‘A’ team that would have won the race had they not competed as an exhibition.
Other members of the Class of 2018 to win Friday included Ally Howe (100-yard backstroke, 53.85), Lindsey Engel (200-yard butterfly, 2:00.45) and Janet Hu (100-yard butterfly, 54.44).
Junior human biology major Sarah Haase won the 100-yard breaststroke, out-touching fellow Cardinal Katie Olsen, 1:01.45-1:01.75. Olsen, a senior management science and engineering major, later won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.58.
Bonnie Brandon led the Wildcats with wins in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. She also pushed Manuel to the wall in the 200 free, falling 1:46.20-1:46.25 to the Cardinal star.
Stanford was joined in the dual by the men’s team, which topped Arizona, 160-101.
The Cardinal squads make the short trip to Tempe, Arizona, tomorrow to face the Sun Devils in a dual meet. The matchup will be streamed live via Arizona State’s Pac-12 video portal.
