STANFORD, Calif. -- The Stanford baseball team opened the 2015 campaign with a 4-2 loss to Indiana Friday afternoon despite a late rally and 5.2 strong innings from starter Cal Quantrill. Over 1,200 fans came out to Klein Field at Sunken Diamond on a sunny day with temperatures in the mid-70s.

Quantrill allowed just one run on six hits and struck out six before nearing 100 pitches during the Opening Day outing. The right-hander’s only earned run allowed came after Indiana flared a single to left, reached on a bunt single, advanced on a wild pitched and scored on a ground out in the second inning. Quantrill registered a no-decision after leaving in a 1-1 ballgame.

Stanford (0-1) and Indiana (1-0) traded hits throughout, ending the game even at nine apiece, but the Hoosiers blasted the only home run of the afternoon to come up with the difference. Leadoff man Casey Rodrigue sent a 2-1 offering from Logan James over the left field fence in the seventh inning to give Indiana a 3-1 lead. James threw 61 innings last season without allowing a long ball.

Each team had three players with two hits, including junior Drew Jackson, sophomore Alex Dunlap and freshman Matt Winaker on Stanford’s side. Indiana’s 3-4-5 hitters - Brad Hartong, Scott Donley and Logan Sowers - all had 2-for-4 days, although all were singles. The only extra-base hit for the Hoosiers was Rodrigue’s homer. Stanford had extra-base knocks from Dunlap (double), Winaker (double), Austin Barr (double) and Zach Hoffpauir (triple).

The Cardinal first tied the game at 1-1 on Dunlap and Winaker's two-out doubles in the fourth.

Indiana’s Scott Effross looked sharp on the mound to avenge a loss to Stanford that clinched the 2014 Bloomington Regional for the Cardinal. Effross’ last collegiate pitch had ended a walk-off home run by Tommy Edman, before the righty faced Edman again to start things in the bottom of the first. The Hoosier ace was in the zone all day, throwing 60 of 80 pitches for strikes. He went 6.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits and struck out three.

Luke Harrison blanked the Cardinal in the seventh and eighth innings and Ryan Halstead picked up a save despite allowing a run in the ninth. Stanford threatened off of Halstead, getting the tying run to first, before Halstead shut the door.

Freshman Quinn Brodey extended the game with a hard-hit RBI single up the middle with two outs in the ninth.

Stanford and Indiana match up again Saturday at 6 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks and Sunday at 12 p.m. The Sunday game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m.
