BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Stanford wrestling team came up short, falling to South Dakota State, 17-15, Saturday, at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D. The Cardinal closes out its dual season 11-4 overall, while the Jackrabbits move to 11-7.

Redshirt junior Evan Silver started things off for Stanford with a 4-3 decision over Isaac Andrade at 125 pounds. He took an early 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first before yielding an escape in the second. He chose to start down to open the third, quickly making the lead 3-1 with an escape. Another takedown in the third was enough for Silver, who improved to 14-8 overall.

South Dakota State evened the dual score at 3-3 after Brance Simms recorded a 6-4 sudden victory decision over Stanford redshirt freshman Connor Schram at 133 pounds. Leading 3-1, Schram was forced off the mat and hit his head late in the second period. Simms took a 4-3 lead in the third, but Schram was able to escape to force overtime. Schram was in on a shot in the extra period, but Simms defended it well and turned it into a takedown of his own. It is just the second loss of the season for Schram, who is now 17-2.

The Jackrabbits took a 14-3 lead, winning the next three bouts. At 141 pounds, Stanford freshman Mason Pengilly dropped a 7-2 decision to Luke Zilverberg. He is now 9-9 on the season. Fifth-year senior Garrett Schaner fell 6-2 to South Dakota State’s Alex Kocer at 149 pounds, falling to 18-14 overall. At 157 pounds, senior Josh Lauderdale gave up a 19-3 technical fall to seventh-ranked Cody Pack.

Stanford’s Jim Wilson ended the Jackrabbits’ run with an 8-2 decision over John Nething II at 165 pounds. He recorded three takedowns, an escape and had accrued 1:30 of riding time to secure the win. Wilson, who is ranked 14th nationally, improved to a team-best 28-4 on the season, including 12-1 in duals.

Redshirt freshman Keaton Subjeck cut the SDSU lead to 14-9 with a 7-1 decision over David Kocer at 174 pounds. He registered a takedown late in the first period and then two more in the second to go with an escape for the win. He moves to 18-10 on the year.

Redshirt sophomore Zach Nevills made it a two-point SDSU lead with a 6-1 decision over Brady Ayers at 184 pounds. With a 2-1 advantage heading into the second, Nevills scored an escape and another takedown for the four-point lead. He tacked on 1:49 of riding time to improve to 15-8 overall and to 8-2 in duals.

However, a 4-3 decision by SDSU’s Nate Rotert over redshirt freshman Garet Krohn put the Jackrabbits back on top 17-12 with one match remaining.

Heavyweight Josh Marchok closed out the dual with a 6-4 sudden victory decision over J.J. Everard, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Cardinal to capture the dual win. Marchok improves to 16-6 overall and 4-0 in duals.

The Cardinal will have a week off from competition to prepare of the Pac-12 Championships, which will be hosted by Oregon State on Sunday, March 1 in
