LA QUINTA, Calif. – Freshman Franklin Huang was 4-under on his back nine at The Prestige at PGA West, finishing with a 68 to lead the Stanford men’s golf team Tuesday.

Huang, who started his day with a birdie on hole 10 of the Nicklaus Course, was even on the front and used three-straight birdies on the final stretch to add a layer of shine on his team-best mark.

As a team, Stanford (288-281) moved up three spots to seventh with its 7-under performance. Arizona State leads the 14-team field at 23-under heading into Wednesday’s final round of the 54-hole event.

Huang is tied for 20th among individuals, with Maverick McNealy tied for third after his second straight sub-70 round. McNealy turned in a 69 with five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 seventh. He bogeyed the seventh hole in his opening round.

Huang and McNealy are within striking distance of Arizona State’s Max Rottluff and Jon Rahm. The Sun Devil teammates are tied atop the leaderboard at 8-under through 36 holes.

Viraat Badhwar’s 73 matched his opening-round score. David Boote was five shots better than Monday’s 76, firing a 1-under 71 to share 47th place.

Jeffrey Swegle was even on his front nine but went 5-over on the back for a 77.

Patrick Grimes (73), Dominick Francks (76) and Bradley Knox (80) are representing Stanford as individual competitors.
