SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Six Stanford players had multiple hits and multiple RBI to lead the Cardinal baseball team to a 13-7 win at San Jose State Tuesday evening. Stanford set season highs in runs (13), hits (18), RBI (13) and doubles (5) off nine SJSU pitchers at Municipal Stadium.

Stanford (7-6) scored in six straight innings from the second through the seventh to run away with the nonconference game. Mikey Diekroeger and Austin Barr each had career-best nights at the plate. Diekroeger had four hits to top his three-hit outing at Fullerton last week and Barr went 3-5 for his first career three-hit day.

“It started with the offense and us hitting,” said Diekroeger. “I thought we did a good job putting the ball in play and making them work.”

Matt Winaker reached four times, including a pair of hits and two RBI. The freshman leads Stanford with seven multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games.

Five different Cardinal players doubled, including Jonny Locher, who scored four times. Seven of the nine Stanford players with two or more at-bats crossed home plate at least once and all nine had at least one hit.

“These games are good for us hitters to get our confidence and get our timing down,” Diekroger added. “It will get us feeling good going into the weekend with a big series coming up.”

The Cardinal, which starts a four-game series with nationally ranked Texas Thursday, blazed to a 7-0 lead after just three turns at the plate by scoring four in the second inning and three more in the third. San Jose State chipped away by scoring two runs in back-to-back innings, the fourth and fifth, but Stanford’s lead was already too large.

Six of San Jose State’s (4-8) nine pitchers allowed at least one run. Left-handed starter Jonathan Hernandez (0-2) went the longest among SJSU pitchers, allowing four runs on five hits in the first 1.2 innings.

Stanford also struggled to find an answer on the mound until Griffin Weir settled in to throw 4.0 innings and allow two runs (one earned) on five hits. Weir struck out five and picked up his first career win. Daniel Starwalt earned his first career save by getting the final batter of the game to strike out with the bases loaded and the tying run on deck.

Freshman Quinn Brodey started and lasted 2.0 innings, while allowing one run on five hits.

Texas and Stanford start their four-game set Thursday at 6 p.m. PT at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Game times are slated for 6 p.m. PT, 2 p.m. PT and 1 p.m. PT the rest of the weekend.
