STANFORD, Calif. -- The Stanford baseball team held on for its second straight win over No. 12 Texas, 5-3, to take a 2-0 series lead over the Longhorns at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond Friday night. Chris Viall threw a career-best 6.2 innings to earn his first win of the season, as Stanford blanked Texas for the final seven innings in the second contest of a four-game set.
All five of the short-handed Cardinal’s runs were driven in by its No. 7-9 slots in the order. Junior Austin Barr reached base four times and drove in one, freshman Quinn Brodey had a pair of RBI knocks, pinch-hitting sophomore Jack Klein smacked an RBI single in Brodey’s spot and freshman catcher Bryce Carter had an RBI ground out.
“It’s really fun to watch us succeed even without [the injured players], especially the freshmen step in and feel more comfortable,” said Barr. “I think it will be good for us down the stretch because we will need everybody to get as far as we did last year and further.”
Stanford (9-6) is missing its leading returning hitter in Zach Hoffpauir, junior shortstop Drew Jackson, freshman infielder Jesse Kuet and senior starting pitcher John Hochstatter. All four major contributors have gone done with injuries and are most likely unavailable for this weekend’s four-game set.
With Hochstatter out, Viall used today’s outing as a potential audition for a spot in the rotation. The righthander, who has struggled with his control at times, settled in to allow just six hits to the 30 batters he faced. He threw 106 pitches, 67 for strikes, while walking three and striking out two.
All three Texas runs were scored on one swing, a three-run no-doubt shot by Taylor Stell to start the scoring with two outs in the second inning. Stell’s first hit of 2015 plated unearned runs after Stanford made two errors in the frame.
Stanford chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the second, before taking its first lead in the sixth inning. Brodey played a major role in each frame, providing an RBI base hit to short in the second and knocking in the go-ahead run on a double that barely stayed fair over the first base bag. Barr, who had singled home the tying run with two outs, came all the way around from first and slid under the tag at home to put the Cardinal on top.
Klein added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out, pinch-hit single to right field. The run gave extra room for freshman Colton Hock, who picked up his third save in 1-2-3 fashion.
Daniel Starwalt (0.2 inning) and Chris Castellanos (0.2 innings) bridged the gap between Viall and Hock. The Cardinal were fortunate to work out of the eighth inning when a potential wild pitch turned into a Texas base running blunder, ending the frame on a 2-4-5 caught stealing at third base.
Barr finished just 1-1, but reached base four times to lead the Cardinal. Brodey was the only player in the game with multiple hits.
“I just took what they gave me and got on base,” Barr added. “That’s what it takes to help us win. We’re shorthanded and we’re doing whatever we can to try to get wins right now.”
Stanford will look for its third win over the Longhorns tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. Sophomore righty Brett Hanewich is slated to pitch against Texas ace Parker French.
