STANFORD, Calif. -- Texas ace Parker French outdueled Stanford’s Brett Hanewich Saturday at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond to get Texas its first win on the third day of a four-game series. The Longhorns edged the Cardinal 3-1 to win at Sunken Diamond for the first time in their last nine tries.
Stanford (9-7) stranded 12 runners, including nine over the final four innings to take the loss despite outhitting Texas, 8-6.
Freshman Mikey Diekroeger was one of three Cardinal players with multiple hits, going 2-3 and driving in Stanford’s only run on a double in the sixth. He one-hopped the wall in right field with one out to set up a second and third situation that would eventually go to waste.
Hanewich (1-1) was the tough-luck loser, going 6.2 innings while allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked three, as he kept Texas scoreless after the second inning. The Longhorns failed to score in the final seven innings for the second straight night, but this time Stanford could not come back.
French (2-1) limited Stanford to six hits in the first seven frames. The righthander worked out of jams in the sixth and seventh, before giving way to Kirby Bellow, who came in for his third straight day of action.
Stanford put two base runners on in each of Bellow’s innings, both times via a walk and a single, but the sidewinding lefty shut the door by inducing a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Alex Dunlap to kill Stanford’s final chance. Bellow forced pinch hitter Jack Klein into a fielder’s choice groundout to end the eighth inning with two runners on.
Texas (9-6) scored all three of its runs with two outs. Tres Barrera singled home C.J. Hinojosa in the first and Collin Shaw slapped a two-strike offering down the left field line to drive in two in the second inning.
Freshmen Matt Winaker and Beau Branton joined Diekroeger with two hits. Branton also walked three times to reach base in each of his five plate appearances. Winaker (.386) and Diekroeger (.395) lead the team in hitting.
Gabe Cramer worked the final 2.1 innings for Stanford without allowing a hit.
The final game of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT tomorrow. Stanford has not announced a starting pitcher.
