PHOENIX -- Sixth-ranked Arizona State scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Stanford baseball team, 7-6, in the opener of a three-game series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium Sunday night. The Cardinal had erased a three-run deficit but could not hold on for its first Pac-12 win.
Reliever Colton Hock had pinch hitter Christopher Beall in a 2-2 count with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and the Cardinal up one. Beall proceeded to take a high fast ball through the right side for a two-RBI walk-off single.
Arizona State (16-7, 5-2 Pac-12) scored on a fielder’s choice on the second out of the ninth, before a walk loaded the bases. Tommy Edman slid to his right and spun back to get a force out at second base to keep the Cardinal alive. Mikey Diekroeger speared a line drive with the bases loaded that would have at least tied the game for Stanford’s first out of the inning.
Stanford (10-12, 0-4 Pac-12) scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning, all coming with two outs and two strikes, to swing the momentum away from Arizona State, which had pulled ahead 4-1. A wild pitch plated a run and brought Austin Barr’s count to 3-2, before the junior DH ripped a single to score two and came around to score on Matt Winaker’s triple to the left field corner on another 3-2 offering.
The big inning gave starting pitcher Brett Hanewich a chance at the win in five innings of work. He allowed four runs on eight hits while walking four. He worked in and out of trouble, as the Cardinal misplayed multiple balls, to leave eight Sun Devils on base.
All of Stanford’s fifth-inning runs came with Darin Gillies on the hill. The Cardinal’s first four runs were charged to starter Seth Martinez and the go-ahead two went to Gillies. Martinez lasted only 4.1 innings, although three of his runs allowed were unearned due to a botched groundball to shortstop that would have been the first out of the fifth.
Edman, Barr, Diekroeger, Jonny Locher and Bryce Carter each had two hits for Stanford, which outhit ASU, 13-12.
The Sun Devils were led by David Greer’s three-hit day. Beall and Barr were the only two players in the game with multiple runs batted in.
Arizona State played its fifth straight one-run game and narrowly missed its first two-game losing streak of the season.
