Before the game, Stanford (5-2) had not trailed by more than two goals in any contest this year. This time, Cornell (8-2) held the Cardinal scoreless for the first 21 minutes until Kyle Fraser got a hard-earned goal in traffic with 8:55 left in the half. Stanford would score three consecutive goals – from Kelly Myers, Lucy Dikeou, and Rachel Ozer -- to close the first half and close within 6-4.
Hannah Farr scored three goals, including an unassisted score that drew Stanford within, 7-5, in the first two minutes of the second half. However, Cornell answered with five consecutive goals to pull away, 12-5.
The eight-goal margin was the biggest loss for Stanford since the 18-6 2012 season-opener against No. 1 Northwestern.
Highlights for Stanford, playing its first home game in 39 days, included three draw controls each from Myers and Dikeou. Stanford won more draws (13-11), but it didn’t seem to matter.
Stanford next plays two-time defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champ Denver on the road Friday and then travels to Colorado to complete the two-game conference trip. Stanford returns home April 9 against Oregon in a 7 p.m. game.
