STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington makes a trip Thursday-Saturday to Klein Field at Sunken Diamond, a place it has not won a series since 1997, to square off against the Stanford baseball team. The Cardinal is coming off its fourth straight midweek nonconference win, but is still searching for its first Pac-12 victory.

Stanford (11-14, 0-6 Pac-12) has started the conference schedule by getting swept against No. 25 Arizona and No. 6 Arizona State. Despite fighting through tough times with an abundance of injuries, the Cardinal is still alive to work its way back in the postseason picture because of its No. 5 strength of schedule.

Washington (11-18, 2-7 Pac-12), ranked No. 111 in d1baseball.com’s RPI, will be just the third team outside the top 100 that Stanford has seen this season. The Cardinal has played 23 of its first 25 games against top 100 foes, the fifth highest percentage in all of Division I.

The Huskies finished second in the conference last season at 21-9 but are already two losses away from equaling their total from 2014. They have faced No. 7 UCLA, No. 23 California and No. 9 USC, taking one game from both LA schools and dropping the other seven.

Freshman Matt Winaker (.326), junior Austin Barr (.309) and freshman Mikey Diekroeger (.300) lead the Cardinal lineup that is hitting .250 as a team. Nearly half (44.3%) of Stanford’s at-bats have come from freshmen, which combine for a .257 (94-366) average. Barr, a usual designated hitter candidate, is No. 3 in conference play with a .444 average.

Washington is paced by Chris Baker (.333) and Braden Bishop (.305). The Huskies hit .263 as a team with 11 home runs and a .371 slugging percentage.

Righthander Brett Hanewich (1-2, 3.48 ERA) will start on the hill Thursday against Washington righty Noah Bremer (3-2, 1.58 ERA). All three games of the series will be aired on Pac-12 Networks.
