STANFORD, Calif. - For 26 years, former Secretary of State George Shultz has lent his name to a Stanford men’s and women’s golf program fundraiser called the “Shultz Cup.” Twenty-one- foursomes enjoyed a day of golf, food and camaraderie Tuesday at the renowned Stanford Golf Course to raise money for student-athletes and help them chase their dreams.

But the highlight came afterward during a private dinner at the Stanford Faculty Club, when Shultz delivered his annual “Update on World Affairs,” then fielded questions from the audience, with most coming from golf team members.

He was in top form again Tuesday, the 133 attendees hanging on his every word and according him a standing ovation. Conrad Ray, the Knowles Family Director of Men’s Golf, and Anne Walker, the Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women’s Golf, showed their appreciation by presenting Shultz a personalized Stanford golf bag with his name on it. Shultz, who played in the event, seemed genuinely touched.

He was also delighted to learn that sophomore Maverick McNealy of Portola Valley has already won four individual tournament titles for the Cardinal this season, and with a 69.1 stroke average, is on track to break the single-season school scoring record set last year by first team All-American Patrick Rodgers. The four victories are the most by a Division I men’s golfer this season.

“This group is young and motivated,” Ray said.

Another local, junior Laruen Kim of Los Altos, leads the women’s team with a stroke average of 72.8. Earlier this season, the team won the U.S. Intercollegiate and is currently ranked 17th in the country.

Ray also gave special recognition to master of ceremonies and long-time men’s and women’s golf team supporters Bob King and his wife, Dottie, and Bob Lazier, former dean of the Stanford Business School, and his wife, Dorothy.

On the course, the group of Hong Seh Lim, Vivian Lim, Goin O’Neill and Rae O’Neill won the mixed flight division, while Graham Brockington, the Enright Foundation Assistant Men's Golf Coach joined former Cardinal standout Kevin Blue, Doug Yarris and Mark Soltau to win the men’s division. Blue led the way by making seven natural birdies and shot a 5-under-par 65 on his own ball in the one-best-net-score of the foursome competition, while Brockington posted five birdies.
