BERKELEY, Calif. -- Stanford’s Brett Hanewich limited Cal to two runs on four hits over seven innings to open at three-game series with a 4-2 win at Evans Diamond Friday afternoon. The Cardinal won for the first time in Pac-12 play in 10 tries.

Hanewich forced nine ground outs and six fly outs, while striking out five, to go seven innings for the second straight start. The righty from Bradenton, Florida, is settling in nicely to the Friday starter role, averaging over six innings pitched in four starts since filling the void left by the injured Cal Quantrill March 20.

Stanford (13-18, 1-9 Pac-12) scored a two-out run in the first to give Hanewich a lead before he threw any of his 100 pitches. Tommy EdmanMatt Winaker and Beau Branton produced three straight singles to take a 1-0 advantage.

Edman and Branton both finished with two hits and an RBI to lead the Cardinal. Edman was again in the mix during a Stanford rally in the fifth, when his hard-hit single up the middle against a drawn in infield capped a three-run inning.

The Cardinal was aided by a throwing error by pitcher Jeff Bain to score the first run of the inning. Mikey Diekroeger followed with an RBI groundout before Edman’s single. Jack Klein singled and Quinn Brodey was hit by a pitch to set the table.

California (21-10, 8-5 Pac-12) was led by Mitchell Kranson’s 2-for-4 day. Kranson was on second base as the potential tying run in the eighth inning, after an RBI double, but reliever Logan James forced the next three Bears down in order.

James earned his team-leading fourth save of the season.

Dalton Jefferies (3-2) took the loss after allowing one run in four innings. He was limited to 63 pitches, as he continues to return from an injury.

Stanford returns to Berkeley tomorrow for the second game of the series. Pac-12 Bay Area will have live coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. PT.
