IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 5 Stanford overcame a late deficit to beat No. 15 Iowa 3-2 on Thursday afternoon at Grant Field.
The Cardinal (4-1) trailed the Hawkeyes (2-3) 2-1 late in the second half before Jessica Chisholm tied the game with 11:16 remaining. Marissa Cicione scored her first collegiate goal with no time remaining on a rebound off a penalty corner shot to seal the victory.
Iowa outshot Stanford 17-9 and held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. Dulcie Davies made nine saves, including two clutch stops just before Fran Tew opened the scoring.
With 1:33 to go in the first half, Sarah Helgeson set up Tew’s first goal of the season, giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead at halftime. Stanford’s lead, however, would be short-lived.
Iowa tied the game in the 38th minute on a Makenna Grewe goal and took the lead 12 minutes later when Stephanie Norlander added a second.
In the 59th minute, Maddie Secco set up Chisholm for the second time in as many games to tie the game at 2-2. Then, on the last touch of the game, Cicione volleyed a shot from close range after Jessica Chisholm’s initial shot was saved by the keeper.
The Cardinal returns to action on Saturday when it faces Saint Louis at Noon (PT) in Iowa City, Iowa, followed by a 10 a.m. matchup against Kent State on Sunday. Live statistics will be available for both games.
