STORRS, Conn. – A late goal by No. 1 Connecticut was the difference Friday evening at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex as No. 9 Stanford’s comeback came up short in a 3-2 loss.

Charlotte Veitner scored with 1:41 remaining in regulation to lift the Huskies (8-0) past the feisty Cardinal (6-3). Connecticut scored in the 5th and 31st minutes to put Stanford in an early hole, but the Cardinal rebounded in the second half.

Jessica Chisholm scored off of a penalty corner in the 50th minute to cut the lead in half. In the 67th minute, Caroline Beaudoin tied the game with her second goal of the season. Two minutes later, UConn scored the winner to halt Stanford’s comeback.

Dulcie Davies finished the game with 7 saves to go along with 3 team defensive stops. UConn held an 18-7 advantage in shots and was ahead 8-4 on penalty corners. Maddie Secco and Sarah Helgeson were credited with assists on both Cardinal goals.

Stanford returns to action on Sunday when it faces UMass, the alma-mater of sixth-year head coach Tara Danielson. The Cardinal’s most recent matchup against UMass came in 2010, when Stanford defeated the Minutewomen 2-1 in an NCAA Tournament play-in game.
