DAVIS, Calif. – The Stanford men’s water polo team totaled 38 goals in convincing victories over Santa Clara (18-5) and San Jose State (20-5) Sunday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep of the Aggie Roundup on the UC Davis campus this weekend.  

Redshirt junior Adam Abdulhamid scored five goals and junior Reid Chase added four scores to guide the Cardinal to an 18-5 victory over Santa Clara in its first game of the day.

Stanford (12-1) used seven goals in the first quarter to build a commanding lead early on. Senior Bret Bonanni led the way with two goals for the Cardinal in the opening period.

The Broncos chipped away at the lead with three goals in the second quarter to cut the Cardinal’s lead to 7-3.

Stanford responded with a six-goal burst in the first 4:41 of the third quarter, scoring eight of the nine goals overall during the period to extend its lead to 15-4. Abdulhamid (4) and Chase (2) accounted for six of the scores.  

Chase, Blake Parrish and Sam Pfeil added goals in the fourth quarter for the Cardinal en route to the 18-5 victory.

Stanford finished off the four-game sweep for the weekend with a 20-5 victory over San Jose State Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinal scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back in the win over the Spartans. It got four more goals in the second and third, capping the scoring barrage with eight in the fourth.

Abdulhamid led the way again with four goals against SJSU. Senior BJ Churnside, junior Jackson Kimbell, and freshmen Marco Stanchi and Blake Parrish each contributed a pair of goals. Connor Stapleton, Cody Smith, Mitchell Mendoza, Justin Roberto, Spencer Rogers, Kyle Weikert, Bonanni and Chase added scores for the Cardinal in the win over San Jose State.

Stanford will return to action next Saturday when the Cardinal travel to Los Angeles, Calif. to face USC at 10:30 a.m. PT. It’s a rematch of the semifinal of the Kap7 NorCal Invitational at Avery Aquatic Center that Stanford won, 6-5, on Sept. 20.
