EVANSTON, Ill. – An overtime goal by Sarah Helgeson lifted No. 9 Stanford to a 3-2 victory at No. 14 Northwestern Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Northwestern (9-5, 2-2 Big Ten) appeared to have the upper hand for most of the afternoon. The Cardinal (9-3, 1-1 America East) was outshot 15-9 by the Wildcats, but scored timely goals en route to its sixth road victory of the season.

Stanford fell behind in the 21st minute when Isabel Flens opened the scoring for Northwestern. Five minutes later, Fran Tew set up Maddie Secco’s team-leading sixth goal of the season to equalize at 1-1.

In the final minute of the first half, Helgeson inserted a pass to Secco, who set up Caroline Beaudoin’s third goal of the season for a 2-1 lead. It was Secco’s team-leading eighth assist of the season.

Northwestern came out firing in the second half, outshooting the visitors 9-5 in the period. Despite Dulcie Davies’ five second-half saves, Flens scored her second of the contest to send the game to overtime. Helgeson’s goal, set up by Lauren Becker, came just 2:17 into overtime.

The Cardinal returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when it faces off against No. 16 Michigan at Lakeside Field.
