EVANSTON, Ill. – A first-half goal by No. 16 Michigan was the difference Sunday at Lakeside Field as No. 9 Stanford was defeated 1-0.

The Cardinal (9-4) played terrific defense in a gritty contest which yielded three green cards and three yellow cards. Stanford held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners but was outshot 9-7 by the Wolverines (10-3).

Shannon Scavelli broke the deadlock in the 16th minute to make it 1-0, a lead Michigan would not relinquish. The Cardinal had a chance to equalize at the end of the half with multiple penalty corners but was held back by the stout Michigan defense.

Fran Tew led Stanford with five shots and Dulcie Davies made five saves. Sarah Helgeson and Caroline Beaudoin each added a shot.

The Cardinal returns to action Friday, Oct. 16, when it travels to Stockton, California, to take on America East rivals Pacific. Stanford then plays California on Sunday to wrap up a seven-game stretch of road contests.
