STANFORD, Calif. – Goals from four players and a balanced team effort was enough for No. 12 Stanford to defeat Cal 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Turf.

The Cardinal (10-5 overall, 2-2 America East) controlled all aspects of play, outshooting the Golden Bears (9-5, 3-1) 14-4 while holding a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.

“We really came together and played for the team today,” said head coach Tara Danielson. “They moved the ball well and played with intensity and confidence. It was a total team effort, and that’s what we were looking for today.”

Sarah Helgeson opened the scoring in the 18th minute. After inserting a penalty corner into Maddie Secco, Helgeson pounced on the rebound from Jessica Chisholm’s shot to make it 1-0.

Katie Keyser doubled Stanford’s lead in the 34th minute, scoring her first goal on the season. Twenty five seconds later, Clemence Couteau set up Fran Tew’s strike which made it 3-0 before halftime.

Couteau added a goal of her own, her first on the season, in the 57th minute to complete the rout. Caroline Beaudoin led Stanford in shots with three, while Keyser, Chisholm and Casey Deeds added two apiece. Dulcie Davies made three saves en route to her fifth shutout.

The Cardinal returns to action next week when it plays host to America East rival UC Davis at the Varsity Turf on Friday.
