STANFORD, Calif. – No. 3 Stanford opened its season with a 436.650-423.900 victory over No. 7 California Monday night in Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal (1-0, 1-0 MPSF) outscored the Golden Bears (0-1, 0-1 MPSF) in five of six events, while four gymnasts claimed all six individual titles.
Akash Modi won the all-around, while also setting a career best in floor with a 15.700 score, in addition to claiming the individual title in parallel bars. Taylor Seaton also claimed two individual titles in high bar and vault with teammates Brian Knott (pommel horse) and Dennis Zaremski (rings) rounding out the individual titles.
“We did a great job on the first four events, especially pommel horse, which can be a tricky event,” said Stanford head coach Thom Glielmi. “Getting off to a great start was huge for us over the course of the meet. It was a solid team effort that we put forth tonight, and with a win under our belt, I only expect us to get better as the season progresses.”
Stanford exploded out of the gate on floor, with Modi, Gabe Flores and Jacob Barrus all posting career bests and all six gymnasts scoring 14.200 or higher. Modi collected a 15.700 score with Taylor Seaton posting a 14.550, which Ryan Sheppard tied as well to lead the Cardinal to a 73.700-72.850 win.
The Cardinal continued its momentum on pommel horse with Drew Willoughby leading the way, putting together a career best 14.900 as Akash Modi followed closely behind with a 14.850. Cal’s Kevin Wolting notched a 14.900 score, but the Golden Bears were no match for the Cardinal on pommel with Stanford taking a 73.550-66.450 win.
The Cardinal kept on pace entering rings where Josiah Eng, in his collegiate debut, posted a phenomenal 14.700 score. Taylor Seaton was close behind as well, tying his career-best score of 14.650. Dennis Zaremski led the Cardinal in the event, with a 15.300 score as Stanford won its third event 73.000-70.450 to lead at the halfway point 220.050-209.750.
Seaton led the way on vault with an incredible career best of 15.400 to lead both teams, as Stanford continued to produce a series of strong performances with Grant Breckenridge landing a 14.900and Akash Modi following up with a 14.800. The Cardinal collected its fourth event win of the night as they topped the Golden Bears 74.350-73.250.
The Cardinal hit a bit of a lull entering into parallel bars, but Akash Modi stepped up to claim the title with a 15.050 performance, while defending NCAA champion Brian Knott added a 14.550 score. Grant Breckenridge and Ryan Sheppard both stepped up next to post 14.400 scores en route to a Stanford 72.000-70.600 win.
Taylor Seaton claimed another individual title in the high bar with a 14.750 to close out the meet, though Cal was able to fire back with Kevin Ko’s 14.300 and Aaron Mah’s 14.200 helping to edge the Cardinal 70.300-70.050.
Stanford returns to action on Saturday, competing at the Cal Benefit Cup in Berkeley at 7 p.m.
