PROVO, Utah – Rallying from being down two sets to one, the 11th-ranked Stanford men’s volleyball team stunned No. 1 BYU, 25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11, Friday, at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah. The Cardinal (3-0, 1-0 MPSF), which remains undefeated on the season, handed the Cougars (2-1, 0-1 MPSF) their first loss of 2016.

Stanford, which hit .290 for the match, forced the decisive fifth set after fighting from behind to win the fourth, 25-23. Down 20-18 in the fourth, Stanford outscored BYU 7-3 down the stretch, notching a .419 attack percentage in the set. There were 19 tie scores and four lead changes in the fourth set alone.

Stanford took a 12-10 lead after senior Madison Hayden notched three straight kills. After an attack error by BYU’s Ben Patch, the Cardinal led 13-10 forcing the Cougars to burn their final timeout.

Out of the break, BYU’s Jake Langlois drilled a kill keeping the Cougars’ hopes alive. It was short-lived as senior Conrad Kaminski and Hayden finished off the upset for the Cardinal.

Hayden finished with a match and career-high 24 kills on 39 swings with six errors, hitting .462. Redshirt junior opposite Gabriel Vega added 13 kills and nine digs, while Kaminski finished with 12 kills and seven blocks.

Senior setter James Shaw directed the offense with a season-high 54 assists to go with five kills, three digs and three aces. Sophomore libero Evan Enriques totaled eight digs and two assists, while redshirt sophomore Kevin Rakestraw and freshman Jordan Ewert had five kills apiece.

As a team, BYU hit .325 and held a 12.5 to 8.0 advantage over the Cardinal in blocks. Both teams committed 19 service errors. Patch paced the Cougars with 20 kills, while Langlois and Brenden Sander recorded 11 kills each.
