STANFORD, Calif. – No. 5 Stanford earned an impressive 157-83 victory against Arizona State on Friday at Avery Aquatic Center.
“The win today was wonderful,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “All in all, I was happy with how our guys swam not only their main event but also their second or third events. We have a very balanced team and hopefully we’ll have that type of depth through Pac-12’s.”
Justin Buck (9:19.38) led off with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with Curtis Ogren (9:24.04) finishing second.
Stanford’s team of Ryan Dudzinski, Matt Anderson, Andrew Liang and Sam Perry (3:13.66) won the 400-yard medley relay.
Liam Egan (1:38.33), Maxwell Williamson (1:39.24) and Jimmy Yoder (1:39.89) swept the podium of the 200-yard freestyle.
Spencer DeShon (20.47) won the 50-yard freestyle with Connor Black (20.96) and Brad Zdroik (21.02) in third and fourth place, respectively.
Stanford dominated the 400-yard individual medley with Abrahm DeVine (3:53.14), Ogren (3:53.98) and Jack Walsh (3:59.41) making up the top three.
Yoder (1:46.53) won the 200-yard butterfly with Gray Umbach (1:47.12) in third. Umbach was the lone Stanford senior to swim on Friday.
Egan (4:27.12) won his second event of the afternoon with a strong swim in the 500-yard freestyle while Maxwell Williamson (4:32.29) and Ogren (4:34.82) rounded out the podium.
Anderson (1:59.12) impressed in the 200-yard breaststroke, going under two minutes for the second time this season.
Perry, Black, DeShon and Cole Cogswell (2:58.91) finished it off for Stanford in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Cardinal beat the Sun Devils, 157-83.
On the diving side of the competition, Connor Kuremsky (339.68) finished second in the 1-meter while Ted Miclau (325.95) was the runner-up in the 3-meter.
“Tarek and Ted did a pretty nice job while trying some new dives,” said diving coach Patrick Jeffrey. This is the time of year when you put in new tricks; sometimes they come off and sometimes they don’t. It’s important to do it now so we know what to do at the end of the season.”
The Cardinal returns to action tomorrow at 12 p.m., hosting Arizona in a coed conference dual meet. Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
