Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to join the Stanford Lightweight Rowing team?

No! You will learn everything you need to know about the sport during your first year as a novice athlete. If you like a challenge, have a passion for working hard, and participating in a team-sport, give rowing a try!

What does “Lightweight” mean?

A lightweight rower must compete in the spring quarter at 130lbs or less. If you’re interested in the sport but do not meet this requirement, the Openweight Rowing team has a walk-on team as well! If you are 115lbs or less, consider becoming a coxswain. These individuals sit in the stern of the boat and are responsible for steering, calling commands, assisting with technique, executing the race plan, practices, and more!

Where do we practice?

Most days we will practice at the Stanford Rowing & Sailing Center, transportation to the center is provided. Land practices will be held on-campus at the Ford Center or other athletic facilities.

What does the try-out consist of?

Try-outs will take place during the fall quarter. During this time, you will be taught the fundamentals of rowing. Your athletic ability will be measured both on the water, and on land during a variety of ergometer workouts and body circuits.

How can I prepare for try-outs?

Start building your overall fitness! At the beginning we will mostly focus on the technical side of the rowing stroke, and build fitness during land workouts. The better shape you’re in when you start, the easier it is to learn!

What are the benefits of being a Division I Varsity Athlete at Stanford?

In exchange for your hard work and dedication to academic and athletic excellence, Stanford Athletics will provide you with a valuable support system of friends and professionals. Once on the team, you will be awarded the same benefits as every other Stanford varsity athlete on campus including:

- Academic advisors who work exclusively with student-athletes along with other academic resources
- Certified Strength and Conditioning staff and state-of-the-art weight room facilities
- Certified athletic trainers and Stanford Sports Medicine Physicians
- Free tutoring and other academic resources
- Access to a Certified Nutritionist and Sport Psychologist
- Trips along the East and West Coast for competition

What do I need to do to try-out?

The best place to start is by filling out our walk-on questionnaire. You’ll be included in emails to other walk-ons and will be sent information about getting cleared for try-outs. A physical exam needs to be completed along with other forms before you can begin, so the earlier to start working on these, the better!
